From Workshop to Community of Practice
As Augmented Reality (AR) becomes increasingly available, more people are using this technology to leverage Social Justice action that -with or without property gatekeepers’ permission- challenges dominant narratives about contested places. Either by revealing hidden histories, reimagining problematic monuments, or celebrating minoritarian communities, AR experiences supporting place-based Social Justice create new opportunities while introducing practical and ethical challenges that require multidisciplinary collaboration and collective deliberation. This workshop aims to bring together an interdisciplinary group of activists, computer scientists, designers, media scholars, and community leaders to share their experiences and co-create a collection of artifacts intended to inspire future instances of AR for place-based Social Justice. How to Participate
From December 2023 to February 2024, we are inviting the participation of individuals involved in the creation of AR-supported Social Justice initiatives. To participate, you need to submit a 1-6 page position paper and be accepted into the workshop. Click here to read the call for proposals.
Workshop Goals
- Build community around social justice AR. Connect creators and researchers working in this emerging domain.
- Interdisciplinary discussion. Bring together multiple perspectives, from complementary backgrounds, lived experiences, and expertises to identify opportunities and challenges for social justice AR across domains.
- Develop an interactive database of artifacts. Given the difficulty of accessing site-specific AR experiences, a repository of exemplars can serve as a resource for future social justice AR projects.
